McNabb Trade: NFL Draft Impact

Monday, April 5th, 2010

by Jared Smola

The McNabb-to-Washington trade is about as big of a blockbuster as we get in the NFL.  And you’ll get all sorts of analysis on the deal over the coming days and weeks.  We’ll have our fantasy impact article up early this week.

The trade obviously has a huge affect on the Eagles, Redskins, and the rest of the NFC East.  But it also changes the entire landscape of the NFL Draft.

I just posted a brand new mock draft this past Saturday.  It’s now outdated since I had the Redskins selecting Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen with the 4th overall pick.

Washington might still select a QB later this month – McNabb is already 32 years old – but that won’t come until the later rounds.  In the 1st-round, Oklahoma St. Russell Okung figures to be their top target.

But there’s no guarantee Okung makes it to them.  The hot rumor over the past week has been that the Lions are strongly considering Okung with the 2nd-overall pick.  That’d leave the Redskins in a tough spot.  The other top OTs – Bryan Bulaga, Trent Williams, and Anthony Davis – are still possibilities, but it’d be a reach at #4.  The Redskins could also take the best player available in Tennessee SS Eric Berry.

As for Clausen, he could now be in for a draft day slide.  The first team that may consider him is Cleveland at #7.  But they added both QB Jake Delhomme and QB Seneca Wallace this offseason and will likely address the secondary with the 1st-rounder.

The Bills would take a long look at Clausen, but they could elect to improve their offensive line with the 9th-overall pick and go with Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatrick, or Brian Brohm at QB in 2010.

If Clausen makes it past Buffalo, the Jaguars figure to consider him at #10.  QB David Garrard is 32 years old, but he’s also signed for another 4 years.  Jacksonville has bigger needs at OL, DE, and LB.

If Clausen slides out of the top-10, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him drop all the way to the bottom of the 1st-round to a team like the Cardinals or Vikings.
