Let’s cut Larry a little slack

by John Miller
We went back and watched the replay of the Chiefs/Cardinals preseason game. Larry Johnson clearly looks 100% recovered from that broken foot. He made cuts, accelerated quickly, and drove into piles like he always has. New Chiefs OC Chan Gailey is mixing up the plays too. On a 3rd-and-short, QB Brodie Croyle motioned out wide and LJ took a direct snap and slipped in for a 1st-down. It’s this keep-’em-on-their-heels playbook that could help Johnson find room to run. We nudged him up the MVP Board a bit.  1st round pick? Nope. But you don’t have to take him there. LJ is falling to the mid-2nd pretty regularly. That price is more reasonable.

Note: Kolby Smith is clearly LJ’s handcuff. He’s running hard. Smith had one run vs. Arizona where he did a 360-spin and LB Gerald Hayes dropped his laundry. Rookie RB Jamaal Charles is not in the picture.

I agree- alot of fantasy owners(myself included) will be sour on LJ after he screwed us over last season. The common knock is that he plays on a bad offense. But look at the supporting cast when LJ and Priest Holmes put up huge numbers for the Chiefs in 2003-2006; guys like Trent Green, Johnny Morton and Eddie Kennison ? Decent players indeed- but juggernauts they were not. Yes, the line was better back then (Will Shields, where are you ?), but all hope is not lost. LJ still has enough left in the tank for a decent season- and enough to warrant a mid to late 2nd round pick.
