Detroit always sniffs around the Heisman

Monday, December 29th, 2008

by John Miller

I saw a piece at the Dallas Morning News about how many former Heisman winners have been picked by the Detroit Lions over the years. The Lions have selected a record 8 Heisman Trophy winners going back to 1942. They’ve also signed 4 other Heisman winners for a grand total of 12 winners in silver-and-blue. Then it got me thinking, how many Lions’ picks won-or-almost-won the Heisman?  I checked back through the Heisman voting archives. There’s 10 in just the last 23 years, and if they draft Sam Bradford it will be 11!

1986 QB Chuck Long / 2nd
1989 QB Rodney Peete / 2nd
1989 RB Barry Sanders / WON
1990 QB Andre Ware / WON
1991 WR Herman Moore / 6th
2002 QB Joey Harrington / 4th
2003 WR Charles Rogers / 10th
2005 WR Mike Williams / 8th
2007 WR Calvin Johnson / 10th
2008 RB Kevin Smith / 8th
2009 QB Sam Bradford (?) / WON

DeAngelo & Jonathan: “Double Trouble”

Monday, December 29th, 2008

by John Miller

DeAngelo Williams (1,636 total yards, 20 TDs) & Jonathan Stewart (883 total yards & 10 TDs) have been looking for a duo nickname after Titans RB LenDale White said they stole “Smash & Dash” from he and Chris Johnson. White called them “Identity & Theft” … Well, the Panthers boys finally settled on a name (and designed a new website to announce it):  Double Trouble.

Draft Sharks Invitational Leagues FINAL

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Lenny & Jared teamed up to win the Draft Sharks Invitational Leagues Title. Their team featured Jay Cutler, Steven Jackson, Chris Johnson, Ronnie Brown, Andre Johnson, Wes Welker, Derrick Mason, and the Packers DEF/ST. They win a free seat at the 2009 WCOFF which they will be giving to DS customer Clayton Ward, who is currently stationed in Iraq. Clayton will be drafting for a shot at $300,000 in September!  Good luck buddy!

Also let’s give a shout-out to Go Vikes, who had the 2nd-most points and was the highest scoring Draft Sharks customer in both leagues.

Quote of the Week

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

by John Miller

During the Jets/Seahawks game in week 16 CBS announcers Gus Johnson and Steve Tasker were discussing Mike Holmgren’s legacy as he steps down in Seattle. Holmgren is one of 5 coaches to leads two different teams to a Super Bowl, along with Bill Parcells, Dick Vermeil, Don Shula, and Dan Reeves. He’s been in the Super Bowl 3 times and won one in Green Bay. Holmgren has 8 career division titles and a .594 career winning percentage. “He’s definitely one of the greatest coaches of all time,” said Tasker.  “Yeah,” said Johnson, “especially because he’s one of the few coaches in NFL history to never get fired.”

JUMbotron: Who are the most efficient RBs?

Saturday, December 20th, 2008

by John Miller

This is my favorite way to measure an RB’s efficiency. How many 10-yard plays, rushing or receiving, has he generated per # of touches?  STATS Inc only records 10-yard runs so I go back and manually add in 10-yard catches by studying game logs.  Darren McFadden sneaks in there with a 10-yd play every 6.1 touches (!).

(Fresh legs obviously help, but production is production)

10-yd plays per touch through Week 15
RB Touches 10 yd plays Avg
Jerious Norwood 120 23 5.22
Derrick Ward 190 33 5.76
D. McFadden 122 20 6.10
M. Jones-Drew 208 33 6.30
Pierre Thomas 144 21 6.86
Kevin Smith 222 32 6.94
Sammy Morris 132 19 6.95
Mewelde Moore 170 23 7.39
DeAngelo Williams 246 33 7.45
Chris Johnson 276 37 7.46
Warrick Dunn 208 27 7.70
Adrian Peterson 339 44 7.70

JUMbotron: Let’s Talk DeAngelo

Monday, December 15th, 2008

by John U. Miller IV

My buddy ‘thaas’ on the Forums asked me what I thought about DeAngelo Williams.  I think he’s a monster.

DeAngelo has that combination of a low center of gravity with amazing spin-cycle balance that makes it so hard to tackle him. Barry Sanders had it and Maurice Jones-Drew has it. DeAngelo has also gained 7 or 8 pounds of pure muscle since he was at Memphis — but hasn’t lost any speed.  In fact, it seems like he’s in Matrix mode with defenders moving in slow motion.

But where does he go in fantasy drafts next year? Good question. It’s too early to tell but I’m guessing D.W. lands at around #11 or #12 overall, on the turn in 12-team leagues. Those picking at 1-2-3-4-5 will gobble up the more traditional workhorse backs – Peterson, Turner, Forte, Westbrook, maybe Lynch depending on offseason buzz. Then those picking in the middle of the 1st round will look at Tomlinson (he’ll fall to at least 6th), Thomas Jones, Chris Johnson, maybe even QB Drew Brees or WR Andre Johnson. Even though D.W. will lead the league in TDs in 2008, he will slip down the 1st round because everyone will say, “I’m worried about Jonathan Stewart.”

Don’t be afraid of Stewart.  It’s the new age in RB deployment, where many teams are playing thunder-and-lightning in order to wear down defenses. Teams like Carolina, Baltimore, Tennessee, and Minnesota are running it 30, maybe 35 times per game. There’s plenty to go around.  Toss in a few dump passes or screens and even a lead “platoon” back can amass 18-20 touches easily. Williams is the starter, and he’s going to stay in when he’s rolling. Side note: Rookie RT Jeff Otah is looking like a once-in-a-decade pick too.

Besides, how many 370-carry bell cows are left these days? Almost every stud RB you pick will have that “I’m worried about” guy behind him. Look, only 5 guys are projected to go over 300 carries this year – Peterson, Turner, Forte, Portis and Grant.  Thomas Jones is right on pace for 300 too. In 2003 there were 13 RBs over 300 carries. Coaches have seen what massive workloads did to guys like Tomlinson or Larry Johnson. Defenders are too big and too physical now, and the hits cumulatively reduce a back’s effectiveness. Teams are losing on their big-money RB investments. Don’t you bet Jerry Jones wants a do-over on Marion Barber’s $45 million contract?

Not only is DeAngelo Williams going to stay fresh with Stewart in the mix, he’s less likely to get smacked anyway because his pads are so low.

I thought he was the best player in college football at Memphis. Many don’t realize that DeAngelo is currently the NCAA Division I-A all-time leader with 7,573 all-purpose yards. Think about that.

He’s a monster.

Michigan RB Sam McGuffie

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

by John Miller

ESPN.com reports tonight that a freshman tailback at Michigan named Sam McGuffie wants to transfer closer to home in Texas.

“I’ve talked to Sam before the [Thanksgiving] break and after the break,” said Michigan HC Rich Rodriguez. “We have several concerns. Sam has concerns at home, and we have concerns because he’s had multiple concussions, three of them, so there’s a lot of concerns there.”

So who is Sam McGuffie? He’s 5′11/185 and he posted 486 yards & 3 TDs for the Wolverines this year. A nobody. But McGuffie was somebody at Cy-Fair High (TX)… after 775,000 views on YouTube !!!
